A new study suggests that the exoplanet Gliese 832c has liquid water and could potentially be habitable for advanced life. The planet was discovered in 2004 by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The study found that Gliese 832c is “an extraordinarily good candidate” for life because it’s in the right location to orbit around its star, has the right temperature to allow liquid water on its surface and doesn’t have a large moon that could accidentally crash into its planet. “Gliese 832c is only about 800 light years away, it’s in the right temperature and it’s rocky. It’s just the right place to be,” Andrew Rushby, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge and lead author of the study, told NASA. “There’s no question we’re in a good position to search for extraterrestrial life.” The research, published in the journal Astrobiology, suggests Gliese 832c could be the first habitable planet outside of our solar system. Jupiter’s moon Europa, for example, is thought to have a subsurface ocean of water underneath its icy crust. NASA has developed a mission called Europa Clipper to explore the icy moon, as well as several others in the outer solar system. Another planet, Kepler-452b, which lies 500 light years away, could also support liquid water, despite being further away from its star. “The thing that’s so nice about this planet is that there’s a much greater probability of finding planets like that nearby because we’re looking at them so early,” Rushby said. NASA estimates that there are at least 100 million habitable planets in the Milky Way. However, Earth is the only planet known to host life, and it’s a huge mystery why it came to exist. “If Gliese 832c is a good potential candidate for habitability, then that’s really good news. It
